Midland Eye Celebrate 15 Years

Five founding partners with a vision for a new way forward in the delivery of the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions have established Solihull-based Midland Eye as one of the leading clinics in the UK.

In just 15 years their concept for a ‘one-stop’ specialist eye clinic has taken off and is now recognised as a centre of excellence for a wide range of procedures and treatments.

The clinic, which occupies the former building of the Solihull Society of Arts in Lode Lane, underwent a £500k refurbishment and extension programme towards the end December 2014. This was completed some five weeks later and included a new theatre and consultation services.

One of the founding partners, Ophthalmic Surgeon Mark Benson, commented: “We have some of the most sophisticated diagnostic and surgery equipment available anywhere in the world. This includes the LENSAR laser system – one of only four in the country – designed specifically for refractive cataract surgery.”

Clinic Manager Eric Bowen added: “We aim to provide the highest levels of patient care and were recently awarded an overall ‘good’ rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), that included an outstanding grading for the leadership, management and governance of the clinic, assuring the delivery of high-quality patient-centred care.

“As one of the foremost eye clinics in the UK – with leading consultants and first-class facilities – we are able to offer treatment for a wide range of eye conditions including cataracts, laser eye surgery and clear lens extraction for vision correction, as well as cosmetic eye procedures. These include cosmetic eye surgery such as Blepharoplasty, a procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids by removing fat, skin or muscle – or possibly all three – from the eyelids.

“This surgery can correct drooping eyelids and puffy bags which make people look older and more tired than you feel, or affect your vision. We also offer Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, the latest treatment for Dry Eye – a condition that affects an estimated 30 to 40 per cent of the population.”

Each consultant is qualified to treat common eye conditions, but also have a particular area of interest, ensuing that patients get the best possible outcome.

The practice partners have an extended team of experienced practitioners that include Nick Dash, who was named dry eye practitioner of the year in 2017 by the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA).

Renowned Ophthalmic Consultant Surgeon Professor Sunil Shah was included in a Top 100 Power List published by Ophthalmologist magazine earlier this year. An active researcher and innovator – he was the pioneer of LASEK laser eye surgery – his philanthropic work in Cambodia has been well documented.

More recently, he was appointed President of the BCLA and pledged to ‘push the boundaries’ of modern eye health and lead a new generation of pioneers to revolutionise day-to-day practice.

Erica Bowen concluded: “We are proud of what has been achieved at Midland Eye. Our consultants are supported by a first-class team who ensure patients are made to feel welcome, comfortable and relaxed throughout their time with us.”
