Professor Shah Wins Professional of the Year at the Asian Achievers Awards

Local consultant ophthalmic surgeon Professor Sunil Shah from Midland Eye, Solihull and Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, City Hospital bestowed with the national Asian Achievers Gold Award for Professional of the Year (http://aaa.abplgroup.com/) today at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

Professor Shah stated that he felt very honored to receive the award and thanked his research and his clinical team for helping him achieve excellence both on the academic an surgical aspects of his work.

Professor Sunil Shah is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre, the second largest Eye Unit in the country. He is also an Honorary Consultant at the Birmingham Children's Hospital. 

He is an Honorary Professor at The University of Ulster in Belfast; UKM Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpar and a Visiting Professor at Aston University, Birmingham in recognition of his teaching and research.

He specialises in complex corneal and refractive surgery with the majority of his patients coming from other consultants who also specialise in cornea. He independently developed the laser eye surgery technique now called LASEK and was the first person to use it in Britain and continues to pioneer this technique. He is one of only 3 surgeons in the country performing corneal transplants in babies and is the only surgeon in the country dealing with some other rare eye conditions. He is also very well known for his training of junior doctors.

He has had well over 75 publications in peer reviewed journals, as well as various book chapters. 

Sunil is Section Editor for 2 major journals: British Journal of Ophthalmology and Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and is on the Editorial Board for Ophthalmology Times. He also regularly reviews articles for suitability for a large number of academic journals.

He is also the Principle Editor & Tutor for the E-learning Masters course in Cataract and Refractive surgery for the University of Ulster.

Sunil is an Examiner for The Fellowship of British Contact Lens Association and also for the Refractive Assessment for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. 

He is the youngest ever past President of the British Society for Refractive Surgeons and was previously a Member of Council for The British Contact Lens Association.

He continues to be on the Refractive Working Party for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a Specialist Advisor to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence and has recently become an adviser for the British Standards Institute.

Sunil continues to take a very active role in research with special interest in the accuracy of measuring pressure inside the eye and also for the development of new intraocular lenses for cataract surgery and has numerous students that he is supervising for their MSc or PhD at any one time.
